One week the editor of Housewife magazine called my boss and asked me to write a column – the cookery editor had gone away on a press trip. I was terrified. I said I hadn’t passed English at school, so how could I write a column? My boss said, just write as you speak, and that was good advice. I’ve done that ever since.
